We present you the school projects and campaigns of the Secondary School “Konstantin Petkanov”, Burgas, part of the project “Changing with Climate”. In the period from March to May this year, a total of 527 students, teachers from school, parents and experts took part in them.
Project “Energy efficiency”
The school developed a system of activities aimed at an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Discussions were held on Climate change and separate waste collection, and through a number of presentations, students learned more about energy efficiency. Containers for separate waste collection were made and, thanks to art workshops, waste was turned into art. Brochures were also produced with tips on how to use natural resources wisely.
Project “Climate, Nature, the World and We the People”
The project informs how the 2°C temperature rise has led to serious negative impacts on the natural environment, human health and well-being.
As part of the project, students produced leaflets to make a wider range of people, from different age groups, aware of climate change and its outcome. They held meetings to involve external organizations. They made posters for containers and leaflets for separate collection. They installed a bicycle stand to promote a greener way of travelling, also conducting an information campaign on the subject.
Project “Let’s adopt a tree in the school yard”
The hands-on activities of the project were initially aimed at young pupils and were related to learning about the variety of tree species in the school yard. Through evocative stories from specialists, the children learned about the care that makes trees healthy. Tree stories, role-playing games and case studies were created to explore the relationship between trees, climate and human health. Children, together with parents, made bird feeders and information signs for each tree.
Campaign “STOP Climate Change – Mission Possible”
The school is running a series of campaigns to involve not only students and parents, but also civil society organizations in this important activity – the protection of nature. Graduates of the school participate in a number of activities forming a civic position on the topic of environmental protection.
When people talk about combating climate change and reducing the effects of carbon emissions, they are often also talking about planting trees. Planting a tree species in the wrong place can do more harm than good to both people and nature. Therefore, during the campaign, the characteristics of where the school is located were taken into account and species will be planted that suit the relevant climate.
When reforesting, it is crucial to select species that are not only resistant to the local climate but would also cope with expected future changes.
Good care of all tree species creates the opportunity to maintain or increase biodiversity.
The campaign uses the learning-by-doing approach that underpins all responsible citizenship.
