Four schools in the capital joined forces to carry out school projects and campaigns together under the “Changing with Climate” project from March to May this year. 345 students, teachers, parents from “Buzema” Secondary School, “Thomas Jefferson” Secondary School and “Yordan Yovkov” Secondary School took part in the project.
Project “Be Concerned – Eat Seasonally”
During the project the students from the “Thomas Jefferson” English Gymnasium learned that eating seasonal fruits and vegetables not only protects the environment, but also improves our health. It supports local producers and reduces the use of energy and other valuable resources. One of the main causes of carbon emissions is long-distance transportation of food from all over the world.
It was agreed with the Balev BIO Market company and the school cafeteria manager to put up posters and stickers about which fruits and vegetables are currently in season.
Students from classes with additional studying of Geography created their own version of the popular game “The Climate Fresk”.
Project “Sustainable development – global issues related to environmental and raw material problems and climate change.”
The students were shown the Netflix documentary “Kiss the Earth” and then participated in a discussion on the economic and social consequences of climate change with a special focus on agriculture.
Using the KLIMADAPT portal, they did their research on a range of topics:
- Food prices and the causes of price volatility in the agricultural sector.
- The relationship between grain and meat production and climate effects on Agrofuels and food production.
- Overproduction in agriculture and environmental degradation.
- The environmental footprint of agriculture.
- Agriculture and multinationals.
- EU measures to support food producers.
- Modern approaches to soil conservation and optimising fertiliser and irrigation rates.
- Zero and low waste technologies in industry and agriculture.
Project “Climate change and its impact on soils in different ecosystems”
The students of the Buzema Secondary School learned about the consequences of rising air temperatures at global and regional levels, which directly affect the evaporation regime and cause soil moisture deficit.
They carried out a continuous analysis with the help of a soil analyser in the schoolyard on plots sown with different crops. Based on this, they assessed the condition of the soils and their amendment by various indicators.
Activities related to agronomy of different crops and reporting of results through soil samples were carried out.
The students made recommendations for soil restoration and soil fertility.
Campaign “Yes to a Clean Planet Earth!”
On the occasion of Earth Day (April 22) students and teachers from the 26th “Yordan Yovkov” Secondary School took part in a number of initiatives that lasted a whole week. Two drawing and photograph exhibitions were organized. The mountaineer Doichin Boyanov was invited to give a fascinating talk to the children about Vitosha Nature Park. A “Nature lexicon” was prepared for the young pupils, and in the class hour there were also lectures on the topic “How to protect our home – the Earth?”. On 22 April a family celebration was organized in the school yard, which with joint efforts turned into an enriched and pleasant place for sports and games. Students from different classes prepared the exhibition “Our messages to the Earth” and the presentations “Vitosha Nature Park”, “The Way of a Bottle”, “Earth Day”. The school club “Robinson” organized cleaning of the alley in the backyard of the school.
