The regional meeting on the territory of the municipality of Tundzha was held on 24 March with the participation of pedagogical specialists, experts from local NGOs, representatives of businesses related to agriculture and others. A key role in the event was also played by the local partner of the project “Changing with Climate”, St. St. Cyril and Methodius” Primary School in Veselinovo village.
During the meeting, the current status of the main areas related to biodiversity in the municipality that are affected by climate change was showcased. Challenges related to agriculture and water were discussed, again in the context of climate change.
Experts from the project “Changing with Climate” shared the main messages from leading international and national climate-related documents, as well as various educational games and materials created by projects of the environmental association “For the Earth” and other organizations We looked at opportunities to introduce climate education in schools.
In the second part of the meeting all participants were divided into 3 groups. Each group was related to one of the key areas: climate change and the environment, climate change and economic and urban sectors, climate change and human health. In each group there were students, climate experts, representatives of the institutions, representatives of the project team. Each group presented their views and ideas after a discussion. Topics for future discussion and analysis were identified in relation to changes in the local climate, forced tree felling, drought and increasing wind erosion, as well as flood and hailstrom hazards.
The focus was on problems specific to the territory of Tundzha municipality. The felling of trees along the highways is one of them, with increase in high winds and wind erosion as a consequence. Tree planting campaigns have been conducted but it is not clear to what extent the tress survive over time. Frequent droughts are the cause of low fertility in the region, and rising temperatures threaten locality-specific plant species.
Climate change has led to frequent events of fish populations die off due to reduced dissolved oxygen in the water, and rising temperatures in reservoirs also lead to fish asphyxiation. This is extremely unfortunate considering that the municipality of Tundzha is the second largest fish catching municipality in Bulgaria.
