The regional introductory meeting on the territory of the city of Sofia was held on 9 March at the National Palace of Children. In addition to experts from the “Changing with Climate” project, institution representatives and climate change experts participated. Of importance was the presence of students and teachers from BUZEMA Secondary School, a partner of the project for the capital region.
Special attention was paid to a project of Sofia Municipality related to climate change. Opportunities for young people, professionals and teachers to participate in other projects of the municipality were presented. Experts of the project “Changing with the Climate”, shared the main elements of the envisaged online information and education portal. Attendees had the opportunity to see what the portal content will look like through games and videos. In the second part of the meeting, participants were divided into 3 groups – one for each of the following areas: climate change and the environment: climate change and economic and urban sectors; climate change and human health.
In each group there were students, climate experts, representatives of the institutions, representatives of the project team. Problems in the respective areas were pointed out, accompanied by discussions and ideas.
Among the topics covered were climate change and human health, abrupt temperature changes, air pollution, soil sealing, old sewers and the need for awareness on acclimatization during extreme heat waves.
Participants agreed that information campaigns are needed at individual and political level on climate change adaptation measures. Various aspects of the dangers associated with climate change were discussed. Attention was drawn on drought, which has led to poor crop quality, as well as increased fire hazard and the need for irrigation.
During the meeting, a variety of issues of the modern urban environment and environmental protection were also discussed. The main objective was to raise awareness on these important issues for all of us, especially with an eye on young people, in whose hands the future of the planet lies.
