The meeting for the project “Changing with climate” in the city of Burgas, was held on 23 March at the school “Konstantin Petkanov”. It was attended not only by teachers and students interested in the project’s themes, but also by representatives of institutions, organizations and experts. The latter expressed their willingness to contribute to the implementation of the project activities and to work on climate change issues.
The idea of an online information and education portal was rolled out. Participants were presented with thematic materials in the form of educational games and presentations. Group discussions were held to discuss key issues in the following areas – climate change and environment; climate change and the economic and urban sectors; climate change and human health.
In each group there were students, climate experts, representatives of the institutions, representatives of the project team. After discussing the issues within the group, each presented their views and ideas – discussed and complemented by everybody present. Conclusions were drawn in relation to changes in the local climate.
Over the last 10 years, there have been observed summer droughts and larger temperature amplitudes. The process of desertification and soil salinisation is deepening. Flooding becomes frequent, especially during the winter months, increasing the likelihood of disasters.
Various factors that affect human health were discussed during the group discussions. Usage of solid fuel stoves contributes to poor air quality. Reduced green spaces for the purpose of land development lead to increased dust and higher temperatures in the urban environment. The need to promote “shared transport”, electric bikes, scooters and bicycles was expressed. The pollution acts a negative factor against tourism, as is the ubiquitous and longer-lasting algae bloom due caused warm weather. Tankers’ waste pollutes seawater and beaches, as well as a range of animal and plant species. There are a number of unregulated landfills.
Locals have observed a lengthening of the summer season, which also has benefits for the business development of the people in the region and their livelihood.
