The regional informational meeting in the town of Belitsa took place on 8 December in the multimedia room of the “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” school. The meeting was attended by 43 participants, including representatives of Belitsa Municipality – Chief Ecologist, Chief Auditor and experts, as well as students, teachers and principals of local schools.
The opening of the meeting highlighted the importance of working together to achieve a deeper understanding of the ways in which climate change affects us. Educational institutions were identified as the natural place for children and young people to gain knowledge about the impacts of climate change, while also building skills for active citizenship through the campaigns that will take place at school level.
Experts from the “Changing with Climate” project shared the educational programs created as part of the project activities. These are aimed at educating teachers about climate challenges. The goal is to make the topic more and more present in the educational curriculum of schools. The participants also had the opportunity to get acquainted with the main elements of the educational information portal, its structure and the content of the main thematic areas. Teachers were invited to get involved in the further development of the portal with educational materials related to climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience.
A highlight of the meeting was the group work on selecting appropriate topics for school projects and campaigns. Attendees broke up into small working groups, each presenting themes, views and ideas.
The topics proposed for local campaigns and school student projects during the meeting in Belitsa were:
- The century old Forest and the century old School.
- Building our own green home.
